Jo Freeman

Jo Freeman is a well-known feminist scholar, speaker, and author. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised in Los Angeles, California. While a student at University of California – Berkeley, she became involved in the Bay Area Civil Rights Movement, then worked for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, first in Atlanta, then in Chicago. She became increasingly active in the Women’s Movement, most notably working with the National Organization of Women. Freeman received her PhD in political science from the University of Chicago in 1973, taught for four years at the State University of New York, then earned a JD in 1982. She is a member of the New York bar and has a private practice in the city.
