Zakiya is a UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow at University of California, Berkeley where she is hosted by the School of Law’s Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice. In 2011-2 she was the Mellon Foundation Sawyer Seminar in Human Rights Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Wisconsin, Madison. Her research is in the areas of social movements, law and society, reproduction and identity. She earned a joint PhD in Sociology and Women’s Studies from University of Michigan in 2011, where she also earned her Masters of Social Work. Her dissertation examined the emerging reproductive justice movement, particularly the mechanisms and consequences of integration of international human rights discourse. This research was funded by multiple sources including the National Science Foundation. She has published solo and co-authored pieces inResearch in Social Movements, Conflict and Change, Sociological Inquiry,Feminist Studies and Societies without Borders: Social Science and Human Rights. In her spare time she enjoys baking.
