Steven E. Barkan

Steven is Professor of Sociology at the University of Maine and a past president of the Society for the Study of Social Problems. He is the author of several textbooks and more than thirty journal articles and book chapters in the areas of social movements, law and society, criminology, and introductory sociology. His 1985 book, Protesters on Trial: Criminal Justice in the Southern Civil Rights and Vietnam Antiwar Movements (Rutgers University Press), won an Honorable Mention in the annual book award competition of the American Sociological Association Section on Collective Behavior and Social Movements and in the annual award competition of the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights in the United States.
