Stefanie Israel

stefStefanie is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame and a PhD Fellow at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies. She is currently conducting dissertation fieldwork in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, investigating evolving forms of state presence and informal social control in “pacified” favelas via longitudinal ethnography (May 2012-December 2016) encompassing the crucial period of the hosting of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Her dissertation fieldwork has been funded by a Fulbright Research-Study Grant, a Social Science Research Council Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship, and a USAID-Notre Dame Global Development Fellowship.
