Rory McVeigh

Rory serves as the Chair of the Department of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame. He is also the editor of Mobilization, the leading journal for research on social movements and contentious politics, and is the director of Notre Dame’s Center for the Study of Social Movements. Rory joined the Sociology Department in the fall of 2002 after teaching for five years at Skidmore College. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina in 1996. His research examines macrostructural influences on political mobilization and on the formation of political interests. He recently completed a book titled The Rise of the Ku Klux Klan: Right-Wing Movements and National Politics (University of Minnesota Press, 2009) and has published numerous articles in sociology’s premier journals. These articles address a wide range of substantive topics including racist activism, structural influences on activism and crime, hate crime, and the effects of various forms of segregation on political outcomes.
