Maya is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Connecticut and serves on the Board of Advisors for the Institute for African American Studies. She earned her B.A. in Sociology from Harvard University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Stanford University. Her first book, Opting Out: Why America is Losing out on Its Young Black Elite, was published in November 2011. She is currently writing her second book which examines the occupational portfolios of female and minority professionals in contemporary American society.
